Lake Okeechobee water draining increases, threatens estuaries

The Army Corps since May has been dumping billions of gallons of lake water through the rivers and out to sea to ease the strain on Lake Okeechobee’s 70-year-old dike, but the lake draining that helps flood control also wastes water that could be needed to boost South Florida water supplies and fouls coastal water quality, killing marine habitat.
