Development bill appears dead but other growth legislation is moving

A controversial growth management bill appears dead for the 2014 legislative session but other bills dealing with the issue are continuing to move in both chambers.

SB 372 by Sen. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, would exempt developments of regional impact from state review in 14 counties.

The fate of the bill, which faced opposition from environmental groups and the Florida Association of Counties, was in doubt last week because its House companion had not been heard. Now SB 372 appears dead after the Senate Committee on Rules did not hear it during its last meeting on Monday at Galvano’s request.

Galvano said he could be back with similar legislation next year. He said another year would provide time to work on issues related to coordination among local governments and state agencies on developments of regional impact.
